The material in this book has been put together over a period of five years. In Pat’s previous book “Pat Godin – Waterfowl Carving“, released in 2023, he described the inspiration and creation of his “decoy” style work going back into the mid-1970’s. The work in this new book includes both Life Size Decorative and Miniature scale Decorative wildfowl carvings. This tells the second part of Pat’s career story. Several of these pieces have won some of his 19 World Championship titles.
The featured birds in this book include the Grouse species of North America, three species of Owls, two species of Accipiter Hawks, two species of Waterfowl, and a Black-billed Magpie. Two of these pieces also include species of Mammals. Pat’s in-depth discussions about these pieces involve the inspiration for their concept and design, development of color schemes, some of the technical challenges he faced during their creation including sculpting the birds from wood, creating illusions with paint, and using metalwork in the making of feathers and habitat. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Biology (1976) and a Master of Science Degree in Waterfowl Ecology (1979) from the University of Guelph Pat points out many interesting scientific facts about the birds and their environment.
This volume contains over 190 stunning photos showing the completed pieces along with numerous close-ups. Over many years Pat has documented the creation of his work with photography and from this material he has included a number of “in-progress” images. Readers will find inspiring ideas on how to approach design and composition with great visual examples.
From the Foreword Kenneth Basile Director Emeritus, Ward Museum writes “Pat Godin has not just written a technical book about carving the various parts of a bird; he has led the reader to understand the physical and material details needed to make a wildlife sculpture, also focusing on the more emotional and inspirational aspects of making a bird sculpture that transports the viewers into the natural world.”
