In the competitions these species of floating waterfowl are best characterized by their incredible detail in both the carving, painting and finely textured surface finishing which often includes the stoning and burning of the feather barbs. We often see carvers show off their creativity and craftsmanship with interesting animated designs. Since the early ‘70s, I have witnessed quite an evolution in this class. From fancy hunting decoys to amazingly lifelike carvings, the caliber of carving has come a long way. In recent years, I have crafted several smooth surface decoys with a lot of creative feather sculpting and very refined paint.
